GLORY TO GOD IN CHRIST church is temporarily meeting in the Wellborn Community Association building until their new sanctuary in downtown Wellborn is ready. The metal shell is complete and can be seen on the corner of 9th Avenue and CR250. The new church building's inside finishing is a work in progress. The church family held a special appreciation time for Pastor Matt Dillard and First Lady Charquita, together with their children, on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Church dignitaries, members and friends enjoyed this worshipful enthusiastic appreciation time together. The festivities included carry out dinners for all.

Dale Barrett's favorite radio personality, "Kickin Kevin" announced his birthday on 102.1 January 6. Daughter Francheska arranged that. Dale had thought he'd be in the hospital but surgery is postponed.
Besides the unexpected radio birthday announcement and the phonecalls of wishing Dale a good one that followed it, his wife Tammy added the final surprise of the day. Friends came for a BarBQ with fixins dinner, topped off with cake and ice cream. He made a wish when he blew out his candle and we circled up for prayer of thanks and petition for a dearly beloved man in our hometown.

NEWS RELEASE from Dr. Everett and Janet Parker

Have you ever wanted to visit the Holy Land and experience the sights and sounds of Biblical times? The Holy Land Experience brings together the sights and sounds of the world of the Bible in a unique and interactive way unlike anywhere else. It is a living, biblical museum that takes you 2,000 years back in time.
You can visit this unique attraction in Orlando that captures all of this when Parker Tours of Lake City, in conjunction with the Wellborn United Methodist Church, travels to the Holy Land Experience on Vineland Road. The daylong excursion will be on Thursday, February 23, with departures from Wellborn and Lake City (other stops as required).
Those signing up for the tour will travel on a comfortable, air conditioned motorcoach tour bus. The cost of the excursion will include transportation, admission to the site, and dinner on return at the Sweet Tomatoes buffet in Orlando. The trip will be escorted by Dr. Everett and Janet Parker, owners and professional tour guides.
The tour will arrive at Holy Land Experience at 10 a.m. when the gates open, and there will be a representative who will give the group an orientation to all of the events occurring during the day. From there, everyone will be on their own to explore the park at their leisure. There are countless static exhibits as well as live stage events and other special activities within the multi-acre Holy Land Experience complex. All of these special events are included in the cost of the tour, and everyone will be able to peruse the activities at their own pace.

Southern Gospel soloist Ann Downing, a popular performer on the Gaither Gospel Homecoming video series, will be in concert at the Wellborn United Methodist Church beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 3.

Ann Downing is appearing at Wellborn as part of a Florida tour with the Gaither Homecoming artists. Celebrating world-wide broadcast success, including the number one spot on Billboard Magazine's chart for video sales (surpassing all other categories and genres of music), Ann Downing has been included in almost all video tapings since their original success in 1991.

Her career as a successful Christian recording artist has taken her from childhood on the family cotton farm in rural Mississippi to many of the nation's largest venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Crystal Cathedral and the Billy Graham Crusade. She began her musical ministry as a part of the legendary Speer Family, later marrying Paul Downing with whom she co-founded a group which helped to shape the face of Gospel music we have today. She won the industry's highest award -- the Dove Award -- for Female Vocalist of the Year within a year of co-founding the Downings, and went on to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Ann Downing Ministries is also home to the "Ms. Lillie Project," a service ministry to nursing homes, the goal of which is to provide televisions, DVD players, and Gaither Homecoming Videos to facilities across the country. In addition, Ann Downing Ministries also helps to host Ann's Middle Tennessee Women's Retreat, an event held in the Nashville area every spring.

Paige Pearce and Zachary Brooks were married on January 2, 2012 at 3 pm in the home of Beanie and Wayne Brooks. Buck and Jan Pearce, the parents of the bride, and Beanie and Wayne Brooks, grandparents of the groom are pleased to announce the marriage of these two young people.
The wedding was attended by the brides parents, her grandmother Delilah Pearce, her aunt Susan Stalnaker and cousin Kristin Stalnaker along with the grandparents of the groom, his uncles Mike and Laurie Bastrache. The wedding was performed by Kathy Snowden who was accompanied by her husband Wendell. Zachary is in the Navy and serves on the USS Enterprise CVN65. He is getting ready for a deployment that will be the last voyage of this vessel on a world tour. Paige is attending Florida Gateway College studying Medical Billing and Coding and Associates of Arts Degree. Best Wishes to the happy couple!

At a casual encounter with Wendell Snowden, your blogger learned of several further chapters in the Wellborn Community Association's continuing effort on everyone's behalf to procure emergency services station here in our hometown. It has taken perseverance and patient conversation with the very few who seem to be in opposition.
So far Wendell assures us to keep the faith. He believes that all systems are go.

Another good news piece is in print and hung on the post office door. The notice says that the threat we all have felt about imminent closing of our beloved Wellborn Post Office has been officially given a reprieve until May 2012.

December 16, 2011 one of Wellborn's longtime residents departed this life. L'Erna Gertrude Parrish was born November 26, 1915. 96 years! Two granddaughters represented her family. Rev. Lewis Gooch spoke the words of faith and comfort at her graveside service in Mt. Beulah Baptist cemetery. Jesus; Savior and Immanuel (God with us) the Christmas story, is also words to speak at a graveside service. Dwight Law remembered Mrs Parrish as a young woman everyone enjoyed in her role as helper in Parrish's store here. I remembered Dolly Perkins and Mrs Parrish's friendship when her strengths began to wane. I am grateful to claim her as a friend of mine.

From Wendell - Last night's Suwannee County Commission meeting was finally successful. With a 5 - 0 vote, we succeeded in getting the Fire/Rescue facility in Wellborn. The motion stipulated it is to be built on the property donated by the Wellborn Community Association, adjacent to the Jiffy Store, contingent on the property being of the needed size for the facility (which it is), and receipt of the state funds which should be received by January 2012 (which they will be). Congratulations to all of our WCA members, Wellborn church members, and our Wellborn community as a whole for supporting these efforts.

Louis Berry dons a replica of the cap he wore in 1945 when he was a teenage salesman with a stand of his own. He sold nickel snow cones on the weekends. His best customers back then were the many tourists who came to Florida especially to bathe and drink the healthy spring waters. Today the great grandchildren cant wait for the cart and the snow cone desserts. Louis' nickname when he was growing up was "Pete". The hat created by daughter Julia Ann, says Pete's snow cones and the replicated stand likewise.
Louis invited me to one of their monthly family gatherings Monday night 10/17/11. It was in the added room he made big enough for everyone to sit down and eat together. "You'll see one of the best collections of children grandchildren and great grandchildren ever there was!" It was so.

Wellborn EMS STATION Update

At the October 5th Workshop, Fire Chief Conner presented his well-prepared study on the location of a new Fire/Rescue Station. We believe that it was favorable toward Wellborn.

At the October 18th County Commission meeting which begins at 4:00 pm, the Wellborn EMS Station will be brought up and voted on. The meeting is at City Hall in Live Oak (across from the Brown Lantern).

We will need your help! We need a strong presence of Wellborn residents to be there to let the Commissioners know that you care. Why? Your life may depend on it.

A Wellborn Delegation attended the Suwannee County Commission meeting workshop Wednesday to make sure the 5 commissioners know that we think now is the time to establish professional Fire/Rescue station in our area. It would be fully equipped ,ambulance and fire truck, and staffed 24/7. We were favorably impressed with the work Suwannee County Fire Chief Charlie Conner did to prepare for this workshop which had been requested when Commissioner Oxendines motion died at a previous Commission meeting for lack of a second. Two County Fire Dept staffers flipped maps, large enough for the audience to see easily. These were graphic representation of the number of calls for service from several sites under consideration. Each Commissioner had a personal copy. Wellborn citizens Wendell Snowden, Pasco Jarvis, Williams, Cathy Nobles, Pat Bezaire, Lundy Brown spoke supporting our District 4 Commissioner Phil Oxendine statements. My reading of where this issue is at is 3 Commissioners favorable and 2 not. The vote will be at October 18 County Commission meeting.

Our County Commissioner Phil Oxendine made a motion today regarding establishing an EMS/Fire Station in Wellborn, but it died for lack of a commissioner to second the motion.
About twenty-five Wellborn citizens attended the Suwannee County Commission Meeting. We were 25 disappointed people. Several spoke when opportunity presented, reviewing the need and the availability of anticpated funds.
The outcome is this: October 5 there will be a workshop where Fire Chief Charlie Conner will bring specific statistics to give the big picture of EMS/FIRE service county-wide. Commissioner Oxendine and the Wellborn people will work together to bring a station which was promised years ago, to reality ASAP.

Clark Donald "Bubba" Salmons, 57, of Palatka, passed away on Thursday August 25, 2011 at Shands at the University of Florida Hospital. He was a native of Gainesville, Florida and had lived in Palatka since 1997. He enjoyed listening to gospel music and was preceded in death by his father Benjamin Franklin Salmons.

Bubba Salmons is survived by his mother, Ruth McLeran Salmons, his sister, Liz Salmons Perry (Calvin), his brother Johnny Salmons and his uncle and aunt, B.B. and Joyce Yates, all of Wellborn.

A graveside memorial service was conducted on Saturday, September 3, at 2 P.M. at Wellborn cemetery with Rev. James Messer officiating.

May our God of love comfort this bereaved family in my hometown.

Fred and Goldie Gaylard shared the joy of their family gathering this Labor Day weekend. Goldie Marie's brother Tim had visited Wellborn but missed the breakfast party because of his job in Texas. Her son Chad and daughter Nikki, with Anthony and Brantley were expected in time for Sunday but they missed the WCA breakfast too.

Yes, I think you should put it in the blog. Comm. Fleming listened to us all last night, but will not commit to if he will vote for Oxendine's motion (which of course is his prerogative). We are fairly confident we have a second to the motion, but will need another commissioner's vote to carry it.
The money will be there to do this, without the county incurring any debt or touching any reserves.

We need a show of Wellborn's concerned residents at the commission meeting, Tuesday morning 9am, city hall in Live Oak (across from Brown Lantern). This is very important. We are on the agenda for 9:30 - of course one never knows when exactly the issue will come up.

It seems everyone has a story (usually a sad one) about how long it has taken for the EMS to get to Wellborn to attend to a loved one. Wellborn is geographically large and growing in population rapidly.

The commissioners need to think about the WHOLE county instead of each one thinking about their own district. An EMS in Wellborn WILL benefit the whole county. All the vehicles, no matter where their home base, travel to where they are needed. Response times depend on where that vehicle is - when the call comes in. Another vehicle is good for EVERYONE. Plus, Wellborn has easy access to 90 (thru 10A), to I-10 up 137, and to Highway 136 across the north end of the county, and to 252 to the south.

On another note -- an important county meeting to attend will be Thursday evening in the Railroad Depot, I believe at 5:30pm, regarding the Fire Assessments. Therefore, the Wellborn Community Association's regular monthly meeting is being moved from the 8th to September 15th. I'll be getting the word about that out on Facebook and the website, and our telephone chairman, Ron Chappel, will be calling the members, as well.

Loretta Barker Jarvis

April 29, 1936 - Aug. 23, 2011

Loretta Barker Jarvis, 75, a resident of Wellborn, Fla. passed away early Tuesday morning, Aug. 23, 2011 at The Health Center of Lake City, Fla. after an extended illness. She was born in Madison, Fla. April 29, 1936. She moved from Madison to Lake City, Fla. in 1959 and later moved to Wellborn in 1963 and had been a resident there for 48 years. She was the daughter of the late Emory and Helen Barker. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and foster mother. She loved to sew, read, travel and spend time with her family. She was an excellent cook and loved to serve big meals to her family & friends. Everyone loved her coconut cake. She held several jobs outside the home. In the late 70s she started providing childcare in her home until 1991 when she retired. She and her husband are still referred to as Granny and Papa Jarvis by several of them. She and her husband were foster parents from 1967 until 1978. During this time they provided a loving home and care to about 35 children of whom several continue to be an extended part of their family. Caring for children was her passion. She was a Christian and a member of Wellborn Baptist Church for 48 years. During this time she volunteered for many positions in the church. She was Sunday school director, vacation bible school director, nursery worker for the bed babies as well as Sunday school teacher and AWANA worker. She received her 10 year AWANA pin for leader of the Sparky Club. She and her husband were trained in disaster relief through the Florida Baptist Convention. They participated in several relief missions in South Florida after hurricanes in 2004 & 2005. She worked with the meal programs. She also participated in the Suwannee Baptist Association mission trips in 2006 & 2007 to West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her daughter Debra Jarvis Hutto and her brother Howard Barker. Survivors include her loving husband of almost 57 years, Walter Pasco Jarvis of Wellborn; son, Wendell Scott Jarvis of Wellborn; daughters, Suellen Jarvis Skinner (Ronnie) and Lori Jarvis Mercer (Leroy) of Live Oak; Tracy Jarvis Osburn (Jeff) of Lake City and her extended family of foster children; Linda Batten Schmidt (Richard) of Macclenny, Fla.; Velma Batten Spruell (Jim) of Gresham, Ore.; Brenda Johnson Bagan (Toby) of Lake City; Brian Johnson of St. Augustine, Fla. and Bruce Johnson of Layton, Utah; two sisters, Ann Barker Brooks of Greenville, Fla. and Joan Barker Johnson (Frank) of Navarre, Fla. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2011 at the Wellborn Baptist Church with Rev. Don Minshew and Rev. Virgil Lovett officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Concord Baptist Cemetery, Madison, Fla. Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers family wishes donations to the Children’s Ministry at Wellborn Baptist Church.

The wedding of my nephew,Brett, was in Skaneateles, New York. I flew Jacksonville to Syracuse where family met me and we drove us to Lake Skaneateles, a beautiful place.
Time away was wonderfully cool and delightful, but just like it always is, There Is No Place Like Home.

I am sorry to have missed Loretta Jarvis funeral but can imagine a full sanctuary at her beloved Wellborn Baptist Church
Her end of life travail was long and hard, but now she has no more sorrow, nor tears and her many beloveds are glad for her to be home free with her Lord, Jesus Christ.

Even though grief is acute and "going forward" without Loretta physically present will be hard, we who are left behind can celebrate her life, admire it, and thank God that her God given number of days coincided with our own in this place.

The obituary was in the Suwannee Democrat. She and Pasco did so many good things for their family, extended family and our hometown and for Wellborn Baptist Church. She was a compassionate, caring friend, always volunteering and ready to help whose smile I remember gratefully.

On Wednesday August 10, 2011 twenty Wellborn people spent 3 hours at the Budget Workshop, Suwannee County Commission at the Live Oak Seaboard-ACL Union Passenger Depot, 210 Ohio Avenue North, Live Oak, Florida 32064 (386) 364 3450.
Civics Class 101 revisited, and I was reminded how slowly the wheels turn in our democratic system when there is need for change. Fire Assessment has a shortfall and exemption loopholes were under scrutiny as was padding a category so as to move excess money as needed.
Our paid commissioners spend hours and hours working on THE BUDGET, the dividing up of our paid taxes fairly. Trick is to match the requests with funds available. Converting Wish List to Budgeted Items is hard and then comes mandated public hearings.
Greg Scott, Parks and Recreation, had just been denied special funds as we arrived for our 2:30 appointment. Danny Hale's library budget sailed right through. Wellborn's request for consideration as a site for EMS station came under the time allotted to Charlie Conner, Suwannee County Fire and Rescue. District Commissioner Phil Oxendine made the presentation. All the commissioners had the WCA letter. Wendell Snowden, Tim Williams, Pat Bezaire, Bobbi Fenderson, Dee Hart, Jack Allred were among those defending the proposition of an EMS station in Wellborn. We learned that crossover training is mandated so that the
idea of starting with just an ambulance station in Wellborn was not feasible.
Linda Gaylord said it for us all when she thanked the Commission for their time with us and promised them that we don't just disappear. The need is real and we will be back"

Scottie's Country Depot is part of Wellborn's history as of July 1, 2011. Bonnie and George Scott have a new tenant in their building. Candi opens an Old Fashioned Barber Shop (NW corner at Wellborn blinker light at CR137 and C-10A)
Candi named this newest business in town MIDWAY HAIRCUTS. She adds she is here to stay believing that local folks would rather save gas and time it takes to travel twelve miles East to Lake City or twelve miles West to Live Oak for a haircut. She welcomes walk-ins; men, women and children of all ages. She even has a mini car for little kids to play in while mom gets her shampoo and style. Prices are right and Candi boasts expertise in style cuts, old fashioned tapers, flat tops, tapers and she will work with you until you and she are both happy! My own "just back from vacation" haircut is short, and good for my current delightful exercise program of swimming/water aerobics four or five times a week. When I need to look spiffier Candi plans to use a curling iron.
A heart warming item from Wednesday's Suwannee Democrat front page quotes Elaina Voyles of Wellborn. It needs to be shared. Elaina observes "There is nothing like watching a space shuttle, so many thoughts and emotions going through your mind. We were surrounded by thousands of people from all over the world who specifically planned their vacations around the event. It was impossible not to be filled with pride and patriotism; in fact as Atlantis lifted through the clouds, a "USA" chant rose from our crowd. Wellborn sorrows with the Moseley/Fulton families. Firefighter Brett Fulton lost his life fighting a Hamilton County fire near Jasper, Monday afternoon. He grew up in our hometown. His momma, Nancy Moseley, helped with old, original Wellborn Whisper through the twenty years it was a hard copy newsletter.
May our Lord comfort and sustain the many local folks who huddle together in grief trying to absorb the shock of Brett's sudden, and heroic death.

Betty Schmidt and her husband Roman welcomed us to Wellborn thirty years ago. Betty was a devoted wife, mother and teacher who spent her final 34 years in Wellborn. She died at home where she chose to be,on June 15, 2011. I am grateful for the friendship Wilsons enjoyed with the Schmidts thru these 30 years of shared hometown and shared interests. A memorial service will give opportunity to offer sympathy to the large bereaved family and thanksgiving for Betty's life. Epiphany Lake City @10 AM, June 29.

WCA Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was Thursday night, June 23, and was catered very well by Sonny's and served at the WCA building in downtown Wellborn. A guesstimated 75-80 people attending included sponsors as well as members who were volunteer workers. Thank you's multiplied themselves exponentially because everyone knows together we can accomplish so much more than any one of us can make happen by ourselves!.Everyone wanted to thank everyone else The Blueberry Festival 2011 was a success. For me the Appreciation Dinner allowed me a grand finale appearance in my role as Grand Marshal of the Wellborn Blueberry Festival Parade, 2011, a once in a lifetimer, for sure. I wore my magnificent Blueberry Shortcake hat and carried the pocket book to match. (Carmen Hernandez creations). Wendell Snowden was Master of Ceremonies making recognitions of sponsors, committee chairs, and the community association board, He saved the Member of the Year award to the last thing. It was Maso Martin, with a plaque to match, and it was well deserved as shown by enthusiastic round of applause. Bobbi Fenderson tried to put into words the huge amount of respect and appreciation all of Wellborn does feel for WCA President ,Wendell, and his wife Kathie. My Hometown can be forever grateful that Wellborn is Hometown for the Snowden family too.

Mrs Blueberry Shortcake (Jinny Wilson) on stage heard very kind words spoken by Bobbi Fenderson. Bobbi remembered the years of weekly Suwannee Democrat columns,the monthly mailed Wellborn Whisper, the Wellborn My Hometown local history book and now this blogspot. It was a Limelight Day for My Hometown and Me.

We rode in a red '57 Chevrolet driven by Allen and his boy A.J. We were next to the Navy Band in the lineup. Along the parade route their color guard American flag won salutes that warmed my heart and brought "God Bless America" to my mind. What a thrill to feel happy responding smiles as we waved to the parade watchers. I think I am the most photographed lady in Wellborn tonight and Carmen is a close second. A GREAT DAY!

David Smith here stands in front of Wellborn United Methodist Fellowship Hall in November of 2008. He had returned with his wife Jennifer in order to tell of a Mission Trip they had experienced in Africa where he shared his expertise in training young men and women for work with Christian youth. 1997-2000 David Smith's ministry toward local youth had kids happily swarming around Methodist Church properties in an after school ministry each week with the serendipity of Teen Time, a Sunday afternoon Recreation time complete with devotions at the Smith's home on Bulb Farm Road. After high school David achieved Bachelor's, Masters and Seminary and has had the pleasure of seeing his written words published in both magazines and a book.
On Wednesday May 11th, 2011, the extended Smith family drove to Tampa to be the dearly beloved witnesses when David Smith was ordained at the First Baptist Church. David's early Christian education was at Mt Beulah, Wellborn. He was baptized in the Smith's pool by Rev. Cheryl Pingel.

Geiger Greenhouses are located on the corner of railroad street and ninth avenue in downtown Wellborn. Young boy Maurice started with a mail order orchid about sixty years ago. The hobby grew and grew.On Mothers Day Geiger orchids brought glory to God as they graced the Wellborn Methodist altar. Maurice explained that the extravagant purple orchids here are progeny of that first mail order plant!

Marja and Sietski are a magnificent pair of Friesian horses, beloved by Bobbi Fenderson.
Bobbi drives a smaller carriage, drawn by one horse, almost daily. Her little dog, who lives like a Princess, always keeps her company. The foto of Bobbi, Jinny, Marybet and Carmen was taken just before Princess jumped in to her upholstered seat next to Bobbi so that we five could go carriage riding. What a swell kickoff to Mothers Day weekend. Fenderson's Imperial Oaks Ranch on 53rd road (Dwight Stansel road) is in a neighborhood of horse owners in my hometown. These are good people enjoying comfortable retirement surrounded by gorgeous trail riding opportunity.
It would be wonderful if Grand Marshal Jinny Wilson could lead the Blueberry Festival Parade of 2011 in a horse drawn carriage. Bobbi knows that her own parade chairmanship precludes its being her carriage and her wonderful horses, but maybe there is another way. Let us pray!

Wellborn is in District 4 and we are represented by Phil Oxendine, who was the speaker at Wellborn Neighborhood Watch March meeting (always the final Thursday of the month, starts @ 7 with a shared supper @ the Blake Lowe building next to Wellborn Park) Our commissioner foreshadowed April 19 (10 A.M.) County Commission meeting as the date to learn if a good light industry for Suwannee County has accepted the deal offered. Its product is connected with lumber and the site for the plant to be built is @ 10 and 90.
Many other Commission business items were glimpsed. The WNW members had questions relevant to our hometown: The unsightly trailers at CR137 and US90, The CSX crossing on CR137 in need of repair, red/green traffic light on US90 and CR 137, and of course the on-going paving roads need. Our commissioner reminded us that the price tag is $175000 per mile and his total money to spend on in a year is $500,000. Mr Oxendine urges citizen interest in the commission meetings and the WNW reciprocated with an invitation to him to come to WNW meetings. He encouraged us and appreciated the invitation.

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

THIS COULD SAVE US!!!!!!!!!
I have totally cleaned this e-mail from all other names, sending it to you in hopes you will keep it going and keep it clean. This is something I will fight for and I hope you all read it all the way through. You will be glad you did.
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 ... before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.
Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.
I'm asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.
In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2011
1. Term Limits. 12 years only, one of the possible options below..
A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congressional members can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

These people left homes in many states, in order to enjoy our hometown in all its spring time glory. They are on a Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) bicycling adventure. They lodged at the Cerveney Conference Center (Camp Weed). Your blogger found the happy group at Wellborn Whistle Stop and took pictures. After confirming directions to Geiger Orchids their next stop, the plan was a picnic at Wellborn Community Park. St Lukes Episcopal church van was a sag wagon for the event.

I notice on your blog -- on the left below where you say "who you are" there is a section which says "Links". This (I guess) would be where you would put links to other websites. I don't have any idea how you do that, but I've never had a blog. On the WCA website I have a "Contact Us/Links" page and put a bunch of links on the bottom to various local "stuff." When I edit the web page I have a button on the top which says "hyperlinks." When I click that button, I type or copy in the page URL I want to link, and then there is a place where I can put whatever text I want for people to click on. Yours may be the same????? So you could put the link below in and then as the text, you could put WCA Facebook or ????

I have met several Wellborn Neighborhood Watch members at the flea market and they wanted to know who our guest speaker for this month will be. The meeting is always the last Thursday of the month,( March 31) at the Blake Lowe building by the Wellborn Community Park and includes supper.

We will be having our County Commissioner Phil Oxendine as our speaker.

He will let us know what is happening during the meeting and what is happening in our district.

I will send out a notice when we get closer to the meeting.

Wellborn was the Fun Ride for this group of active retirees from the Jacksonville area Cycle Riding Club on a crisp and clearly beautiful February morning. Below see some stragglers who had stopped in front of Methodist Church to catch their breath; The Whistle Stop was the designated lunch stop and the repeat customers gave it good press for the new-to-Wellborn riders.
Tomorrow's route has them peddling from White Springs to picturesque Falling Creek Chapel and beyond. They remembered the year this fall ride landed them at Falling Creek in the rain just at worship time. They were invited in and loved it!

Blake Lowe toasted Mary Andrews with a coke on many February tenths. It was their shared birthday. Blake is honored now with the Blake Lowe building next to the Wellborn Community Park. The Andrews name is seen on the dedication billboard at Andrews Square. These two good people are part of our hometown history. If there is a place to share a coke in heaven I bet the tradition continues.

A new friendly guy, Rob Dawson, welcomed customers (old and new) to this months WCA Blueberry Pancake Breakfast. This is a continuing monthly fund raising effort that makes it possible for Wellborn My Hometown to keep getting better and better! The Dawsons joined the Wellborn Association a couple of months ago. It looks like they are glad they did!

Our sheriff was the guest speaker for this meeting (always the final Thursday of the month @ 7 PM in the Blake Lowe WVFD Training Center building next to Wellborn Community Park)
Sheriff Tony Cameron brought the good news that stats for 2010 show decrease in crime in the East side (Wellborn side) of the county. He thanked WNW for their help. The not so good news is that crime in general is up. He suggest the economy and drug use are contributing factors. Burglaries are up especially those connected with selling copper. Recent legislation requires ID for the seller.
These compiled stats are given to the sheriff describing the different categories of his many responsibilities; burglaries, shop lifting, vehicle theft,DUI, non violent crime, violent crime, sex crime, emergency planning and more.
Some up, some down, compared with 2009 numbers. Personally, said he, "It was a tough year". It would have been lots tougher, tho', without the good working relationship within the department and with the surrounding law enforcement people.
He foreshadowed a new and updated film about the Sheriff Department's work to be available soon.

Well, we have a new year and we are hoping for new members and ideas for this coming year.
Our guest speaker will be our Sheriff Tony Cameron who will be there to tell us what happened last year and what he hopes to accomplish in this new year.

We will have election of officers and hope that so many people will show up as candidates that we have problems with voting.

If anybody has ideas about ways they would like to see WNW improved or changed, PLEASE, PLEASE COME AND SPEAK, we would be interested.

Word of the death of G. Humberto Diaz de Arce, on Saturday January 15, reached us in time to be shared with his church family at Wellborn Methodist on Sunday, January 16, 2011. He held membership and occasionally taught from the pulpit @ WUMC. He was one of us for more than 25 years. On the book jacket of his most recent published book "Why Israel" there appears this biographical information. "G.H.Diaz de Arce was born in Cuba. There he received primary and secondary education. He earned a B.S. and M.S. degrees from Auburn University in Alabama. His scientific training and his knack for research led him to study the ancient history of the Middle East in which he developed an intense interest. He worked at the University of Florida Medical Center in biochemistry research. He also worked in Walt Disney World as a paint chemist until his retirement."
Humberto's wife predeceased him. Their four children and their families mourn now. There will be a graveside service on Saturday January 22 at 10 A.M. at Mt Pleasant cemetery on C-10A with family friend Rev. Stan Posey officiating, assisted by Rev. Jim Messer.

Someone has accused us Christians saying that 11:00 A.M. Sunday morning is the most segregated hour of the week.
The Sunday nearest Martin Luther King Day was not so at Wellborn United Methodist Church this year.
We have been having a Unity in the Community worship service on one Saturday a month. All Wellborn churches are invited, but as it has worked out for several years now, sometimes we are a congregation at WUMC and sometimes at Allen Chapel. We have become good friends.
What a delightful surprise, then, to have our Allen Chapel friends come worship with us at 11 A.M. last Sunday. As God would have it there was enough and leftovers for the every Sunday luncheon/fellowship time to be shared following worship
Jennifer Campbell wrote on her facebook page that she sang to a full house.
Sunday morning worship was a foretaste of heaven for all participating.

The 18th Annual Blueberry Festival will be on Friday, June 3 and Saturday June 4, 2011
on Andrews Square 1340 8th Avenue, West of CR137, between 10-A and the Brick Road

WELLBORN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION president Wendell Snowden pushed the snowball off the top of the hill (so to speak) today with a mailout to all Vendors inviting them to sign on ASAP since it is a first come first served basis and the number of vendors has grown each year. Rules, Regulations Responsiblities are enumerated and a signature requested.
Included in the mailing is an offical Vendor Application with fees specified.

Hi all,

It's that time of year for us to start back to our meetings. Jan. 27th at 7 PM at the Blake Lowe Building.

Our sheriff, Tony Cameron will be our guest speaker for the evening. I would like to remind you that this night is also the night we vote for our officers for the new year. It is very important that we get some new officers this year. If we can not find some people to participate we will be ending our group. Many of us have tried very hard to keep this going and wit our nation as it is with terrorism, thefts, etc. it is important to keep this going and become effective in the community. We really need to start the block captains again to help keep our neighbors safe. We know this can work if we can just get ourselves back to the original plans.

Please try and be at this meeting to show your support.

WVFD Tom Maynard said he can be seen in his uniform white shirt and tie at a time like this. A Santa, who knows Jim Bezaire well, arrived on the firetruck and ho ho ho'd his way to the outdoor pavilion stage where each youngun was introduced to him by name. Each child made his/her request known and received a nice gift on the spot too. Cocoa and cookies were available down candy cane lane that lead to the Country Store on Andrews Square. Your blogger took over 60 pictures of kids visiting Santa but found only 17 of them printable. They will be posted on the WCA bulletin board ASAP.

Q98, Kickin Kevin combined with B&B stores and added the drawing for the red jeep that has been displayed at Wellborn B&B. Add a fine Santa Claus (who knows Dale Barrett well) arriving Ho Ho HO on the WVFD firetruck. There were games with prizes for kids. Wii's and other great prizes were won by lucky number holders. Food served up by the Busy Bees. Wellborn merited extra uniformed police on duty to keep all four corners Event Parking orderly. 100s of cars brought many hundreds of folks to Wellborn My Hometown in the early afternoon on Saturday. A Christmas-y spirit prevailed. Great fun!

At December first Saturday Wellborn Community Association breakfast Jan Pearce explained she was flipping out. Just the same she turns from the grill to wave for a photo moment. Pat Bezaire's batter was mixing up and Bobbi Fenderson delivers the orders with a smile. Kathie Snowden greeted and made the tickets and the customers come out even. Wendell was circulating as Maitre d'. Ron Chappell on the keyboard creates pleasant musical ambiance to match the Christmas decorations.

JOY GEIGER tested and was awarded a BLACK BELT at Sepvulda's Taekwondo studio in Lake City. No small accomplishment! We in the cheering section recognized Yvonne Rice's grandson Chris, readying for his test for a Black Belt. Lawrence Whitmore sits at the judges table and volunteered to partner with Joy to demonstrate some of her skills. She floored him!
